Exhibition dates: November 18 – December 06, 2004

The Winsor Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new mixed media works by Tania Gleave. The show presents an adventurous, personal departure for her. Instead of pursuing her frequent wanderlust tendencies, she alternatively remained in her studio and created a large suite of work titled, 'Crossover'.

Gleave redirected her urge to travel onto large boards--vigorously smearing, rubbing and wiping lush oils and graphite, then scratching and scraping away the surfaces using etching tools and various knives. Her colours resonate with the earth and its waters. Images of simple vessels hover, abstracted shapes emerge and map-like lines knit into a network of complex layers. The surfaces on the boards are constructed similar to that of a textile, which is Gleave’s other beloved medium. If the viewer slowly casts their eyes over the surfaces, they will detect unusual oddities. In the work, 'Continuum', Gleave has embedded actual 'bison teeth' within the work. Perhaps Gleave planted these surprises to mimic a traveller's experience in discovering something that is 'exotic' to them.

But, lucky for us, Gleave is not away. She has not abandoned Vancouver for a distant continent such as Antarctica, South America, Europe or Africa, which has been her customary way. Gleave has crossed over, moved into her own space, and articulated a striking journey that she shares with us now.
